Posthumous Awardees

JD Young, Tulsa Rig Iron

JD Young, Tulsa Rig Iron

hall of fame 2027

Mr. J.D. Young

J.D. was an early innovator in horizontal directional drilling equipment and the founder behind the company that became Tulsa Rig Iron’s HDD legacy. In the early 1970’s, Young owned and operated Triangle Supplies in Lafayette, Louisiana, supplying pumps to the offshore oil and gas market. In the early 1980’s, he expanded that operation with a second Triangle facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

As horizontal directional drilling began gaining traction in the 1980’s, Young recognized the opportunity and importance of supporting the emerging HDD market. In 1987, he relocated the company’s headquarters to Kiefer, Oklahoma, just outside Tulsa, giving the company ample room for the anticipated growth of the HDD market.

Under Young’s leadership, Tulsa Rig Iron became involved in multiple areas of the HDD equipment market. Its early divisions included Hydro-Power Systems, Tulsa Trenchless drills, and Tulsa Triplex pumps, with products and services that included packaged drilling mud recycling systems, triplex mud pumps, and mini- through maxi-sized HDD drill rigs. During the early 1990’s through the early 2000’s, Tulsa Rig Iron became a major player in the HDD product market.

JD Young’s contributions helped advance the equipment side of the HDD industry at a time when the market was still developing. His work in pumps, drilling support systems, mud recycling, and HDD equipment manufacturing helped lay groundwork that continues through Tulsa Rig Iron today. JD was certainly one of the early HDD equipment pioneers.
